Istanbul New Airport Steel Trees

Throughout various zones of the TB1–4 terminal building of the new Istanbul Airport stand custom-designed, tree-form steel structures serving lighting purposes. MBY completed the structural analysis and dimensioning calculations for these elements, designed by Tabanlıoğlu Architects.

A typical tree is 9.6 metres in diameter and 6.4 metres high, with trunk and branches formed of H120x120x8 mm S355JR profiles. The structural system comprises moment-transferring frames: lateral loads are resisted by bracing frames while vertical loads pass to the foundation through the diagonals. Profile connections use full-penetration butt welds, with base plate connections through M20 10.9 anchor bolts.

The design followed Turkish and American specifications (AISC, ASCE); anchoring details, dimensioning and fabrication drawings were also prepared within the scope, for ÇİMTAŞ Gemlik.
