What Is Structural Façade Engineering and How Does It Differ from Structural Design?

Structural façade engineering is the discipline that ensures the glass, aluminium profiles, metal panels, brackets and fixings forming the building envelope safely carry the loads they will meet across their design life. It considers element strength, deflections, connection behaviour and compatibility with building movement together. The primary structure provides the overall strength and stability of the building, while the façade transfers its own weight and the loads acting on it into that structure through defined connection points. In façade engineering, continuity of load transfer matters as much as the ability of the elements to preserve glass integrity, connection safety and in-service performance while they move.
The large sections and high-capacity connections found in primary structural design give way, in a façade, to thin-walled profiles, small-diameter screws and precise connections. The brittle behaviour of glass, the temperature- and load-duration-dependent properties of laminated interlayers, the flexibility of silicone and the local behaviour of aluminium sections are among the core subjects of this expertise. Façade systems differ from the primary structure in load magnitude, materials and calculation methods. This shift from kN to N, from M20 to M8, from linear theory to large-displacement theory, combined with more complex materials, calls for dedicated expertise. Structural façade engineering is therefore a specialist field that combines the fundamentals of structural engineering with materials knowledge, detail development and manufacturing experience.
